ABILENE, Texas — Family members, friends, classmates, and the Abilene community are mourning the tragic loss of Michael Menjares, 17, who died following a single-vehicle rollover crash early Sunday morning.
According to the Abilene Police Department, emergency responders were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. to the 6500 block of West Lake Road after reports of a serious accident involving a Toyota RAV4. Upon arrival, officers discovered the SUV had overturned following the crash.
Authorities confirmed that Michael Menjares was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators stated that five individuals were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Four additional occupants sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Officials have not yet released updates regarding their conditions.
Preliminary findings indicate the SUV was traveling southbound on West Lake Road when it reportedly veered to the right, entered a grassy drainage ditch, and rolled over. Police said alcohol is not currently believed to have been a contributing factor, though the investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts.
The crash prompted a significant emergency response overnight as police, firefighters, and medical personnel worked to assist victims and secure the scene. Portions of the roadway were temporarily affected while investigators documented the crash site.
