Scott Gerlicher Obituary, Minnetonka, Death – Former Minneapolis Police Commander Has Died

Scott Robert Gerlicher, a longtime Minneapolis Police Department commander and respected public safety leader, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday morning, June 6, 2026. He was 58 years old.

His sudden passing has left his family, friends, former colleagues, and community members deeply saddened as they remember a man whose life was dedicated to service, leadership, and protecting others.

Born on November 13, 1967, in Minneapolis, Scott grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a strong connection to the community he proudly called home. He graduated from Minnetonka High School and went on to continue his education at Normandale Community College and Metro State University, earning a master’s degree in Public Administration. He also completed advanced training at the FBI National Academy, Class 206, along with numerous other law enforcement leadership programs.

Scott served more than three decades with the Minneapolis Police Department from 1989 until his retirement in 2021. Over the course of his distinguished career, he held multiple roles, rising through the ranks from Patrol Officer to Deputy Chief. He earned widespread respect from both colleagues and community members for his professionalism, integrity, and leadership.

Throughout his service, Scott played key roles in major public safety operations, including coordination efforts during the Interstate 35W bridge collapse, security planning for Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, and public safety operations for major national events such as the NCAA Final Four. As a commander, he was also a leading figure in organizing security for the 2018 Super Bowl, one of the largest events ever hosted in Minnesota.

After retiring from law enforcement, Scott continued his commitment to public service as Security and Emergency Management Coordinator for Minnetonka Public Schools. He remained active in community initiatives and continued to dedicate his expertise to ensuring safety at public events.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Scott was known for his adventurous spirit, humor, and love of life. He enjoyed skiing, traveling in search of fresh powder, and spending many years involved with Ski Jammers as an instructor and director. He also loved time on Lake Minnetonka, music, and bringing people together through his creative and fun personality.

Friends and family remember him as someone who brought energy and laughter into every room, often sharing his humor and enjoying time spent with loved ones. He was also active in community events, including serving as logistical coordinator for Excelsior Rotary Concerts in the Commons and Director of Security for the Taste of Minnesota.

Scott is survived by his wife, Cari; daughters Hannah (Nathan) Schneider, Emma, and Molly; his father, Dr. Robert Gerlicher; sister Susan (Richard) Olson; several nephews; and his beloved cats Poppy and JoJo. He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Gerlicher.

A celebration of Scott’s life will be held on Friday, June 12, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Lafayette Club in Minnetonka Beach, with a presentation at 5:30 p.m.
